How to Speak Brianne

How to Speak Brianne

Subtitle: Apparently I’m often misunderstood. So here’s your dictionary.
There’s more than 10...so much for following a pattern, but I guess this is a necessary evil...

68 days, or as I would say, sesenta y ocho, really just one less day than a number I enjoy having fun with. Oh, what the hell, let's count today. 69!!! Interpret as you will...

Definition 1: Legit. Adverb. See, I have this problem with both adverbs that end in -ly and twitter, both of which have resulted in a problem I have with long words. I don’t use them, I just shorten them for my person convenience.  Ok, ok, I’ll make you a chart.

Word
Bri Definition
legit
for real / truthfully
ridic
ridiculously, a large amount, really crazy
extrem
it’s extremely...are you getting it yet?? Twitter made me LAZY....

Definition 2: OMA & OMD. Exclamation. Ok, so I USED to say OMG (Oh My God) like EVERY other person on the planet.  However, then on day a lovely Christian soul (not that I have a problem with Christians, just hypocritical ones, well hypocritical ANYONE honestly) informed me that since I was NOT a Christian I could not use OMG. (Let’s forget completely about the third commandment TOTALLY here). So, as a pseudo-worshipper of the Greek Pantheon, I have decided to substitute to “God” for Athena and Dionysus, my patrons. It has NOTHING to do with Stargate (although I have nothing against Oma Desala). Also use OMZ, OMH & OMN as needed.

Definition 3: Mr. Canadian Hot Pants. Proper Noun. This is my nickname I coined for the perfection that is Michael Shanks.  It went down like this. Hot Roommate got sick of hearing me talk about Shanks or Daniel and one day referred to him as “He who must not be named.” I calmly informed him that was Lord Voldemort, to which he replied, I don’t care who that is stop talking about how much you love him. So, I started with Mr. Canada, but that made him sound like he was running for some objectifying beauty pageant award. So one day while listening to my 1990’s Hip Hop I came upon an MC Hammer song in which he discussed Hot Pants. And how HAWT they were. And a nickname was born.  Abbrv. MCHP

Definition 4: Space Herpes. Noun. What Vala Mal Doran probably had and passed to Daniel Jackson in “Unending,” the episode that does not exist. Thank Athena for going back in time so Addy has no worries. He still deserves a thump in the head for even letting that happen so it had to be erased in the first place. And NO EXCUSES. She was NOT the last woman. Sam was there. And THAT would have been acceptable!!!

Definition 5: Y’all. Noun. Southern. Means you all. Used to address a large group of people. Used in a friendly context. IF you are not included in a y’all from me then I just don’t like you. Does not connote a lesser intelligence by its usage, in fact, most people I know that use it are quite intelligent

Definition 6: Chica. Noun. Spanish. English translation girl. Related entries: homeslice, hun, mon ami, babe, et al. Term of endearment reserved for my girl friends. Basically, it works like this, if I call you chica then you are in my little circle of I give two shits that you exist. Don’t call you chica.....well....you can come to your own conclusions. Unless you are a dude, and then, you are, well, dude. (See Definition 16)

Definition 7: No lie. Phrase (I think, I mean what in the hell part of speech IS THAT??) See legit. This means it was the truth, no exaggerations, no edits, no changes made for comedic purposes. Can also be used in place of “I agree.” Basically, if I say no lie I am either defending the insanity coming out of my mouth OR agreeing with yours.

Definition 8: Frakkin’. Expletive (I KNOW that part of speech....VERY VERY well). F-word alternative stolen from BattleStar Galactica.  Just more fun to say. Origin: While I want to run away to a foreign planet with Daniel Jackson forever, I secretly want to be StarBuck. Because she could have WHUPPED Vala’s ass. Cold. In like twenty seconds. No Lie ;P

Definition 9: Asshat. Noun. Used to describe a person that is not quite an asshole, which would be an amazing nasty, mean or otherwise disagreeable person, but I am still kinda pissed at so they deserved a swear.  Not a literal hat to be worn on the ass, but if you can find a picture of one send it to me because the sheer notion of the existence of said item excites me about as much as truck nuts.

Definition 10: Cool Beans. Adjective or Adverb or Phrase, I mean, are you really reading this entry anymore for some kind of english lesson. Pretty much cool beans is just another version of cool, like I am agree that what you said is fine, dandy and ok.  This may or may not mean I am overly enthusiastic about it, but I am not opposed. I also use this to appear cheerful and teacher like.

Definition 11: No biggie. Phrase, I think. Let’s go with that. Means no big deal, that it’s ok, what ever asshattery that you or I have committed, it is completely forgivable. Prefer to use biggie rather than no big deal as my person homage to the master of rap Biggie Smalls (East Coast!) and maybe, just maybe, every time I use the term, the Notorious B.I.G. sends down good rap vibes from rap heaven to an aspiring artist. That, and like everything else, Twitter has made me too lazy to type.

Definition 12: Rock. Exclamation. It’s like Cool Beans plus. Sometimes supplemented with a fist pump, hands in the air celebration of followed by the word “on” Used to express extreme happiness concerning a situation. Has nothing to do with masses of stone and everything to do with the feeling you get when exposed to a type of music that white people stole from black people and added a country twist to. If my comment to anything you say is rock, then it is good, I am excited and would most likely drive 14 hours for it ;P

Definition 13: KK. No clue at all as to what the heck this is. Short for OK.  Not to be confused with the KKK (They be asshats that need a frakkin’ butt-whupping that I am happy to hand out). Differs from K, also short for OK, since that K usually is an answer given in tweet/text that is nicely saying f-off I am done talking to you. KK means like okay with a smily or bitch I got the point, stop asking.  May be used with capital or lower case letters.

Definition 14: Gracias. Spanish. Means thank you. If you did not know this you are probably reading the wrong blog.

Definition 15: Sweet Dionysus. Exclamation. See also OMA (# 2). Dionysus was the greek god of the grape, grape harvest, wine making, ritual madness and ecstasy, or for those who prefer the common tongue: Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll. This expression is used when something so great happens that really, only wine can suffice. Spanish. Which to be honest, is often...

How to Learn a Foreign Language

How to Learn a Foreign Language
Subtitle: Your choices are Spanish or Chinese my friends.  Because that is the future. Don’t believe me? Watch Joss Whedon’s “Firefly”
Step 1: Select your language.  Doesn’t this sound familiar? (Search old posts if not). While it seems fun to choose a nice unique language such as Hungarian or Swahili, they’re pretty much useless.  There are over a billion Chinese, and even though they have reproduction rules (I know, right, they’re brilliant!!) if they each only produced one offspring that would be two billion Chinese (stop over thinking this with death rates and the fact it takes two people to make a baby, you get my drift).  And, Hispanics are Catholic, and they are pretty much told by the church to just keep breeding.  Ergo, us English speakers are VASTLY outnumbered.  If you can’t beat em, join em. So, just flip a coin; heads Spanish and tails Chinese.  See, problem solved.
Step 2:  Know your learning style.  This is IMPERATIVE to learning anything.  I could, and trust me as an educator I could, lecture you on the different ways to determine exactly what type of learner you are but let’s simplify this with a flow chart.
Do you like to watch shit ?  ...... Then you are a VISUAL learner.
Do you like to listen to shit? ..... Then you are an AUDITORY learner.
Do you like to touch shit? ..... Then you are a TACTILE learner.
Really, that sums it up.  I like to look at what I am doing, so I am visual.  It’s that simple.  Now, let’s look at learning approaches based on your category.
Step 3: Learning Foreign Languages for the Visual Learner.  You will need three books.  Yes, books, we went over this in a previous posting.  Paper, bound, sold at that giant coffee shop.  Good, you remember. Here are the three books you need:
  1. Spanish/Chinese NOW!! with CD (buy used from Amazon, they are like $.01)
  2. A whateverthehelllangaugeyoupicked to English dictionary
  3. The filthiest book in said language you can find
Here is what you will do: You will work through the lessons in the NOW!! book, checking your answers in the back like a good student and listening to the CD when told.  Then, when you get bored and ask yourself ‘Why in the hell am I doing this?’ you pull out the dictionary and dirty book and start translating that.  That will tell you why.  They have far fewer taboos than we do (Thanks Puritans for that one...) and just as the story gets really good you will suddenly realize that you need to know the correct verb tense to carry on and switch back to the textbook to learn said tense.  Amazing what a little motivation can do, isn’t it?
Step 4: Learning Foreign Languages for the Auditory Learner.  You my friend, need a passport.  Like now.  Here is how you get one if you live in the USA: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html. Can my foreign readers tell me how to get one in your country? Honestly, I want to know, it is probably a heck of a lot easier than here.  And cheaper.  Hmmm... why haven’t I moved to Canada yet??? Hot men (one in particular...), much better TV, free health care, no food stamps.... Oh wait, it’s cold.  Bri don’t do cold.  Even for Michael Shanks. And I ADORE him. Anyway, as I was saying, you will need to completely submerse yourself in the culture.  Completely.  Just pack your bags and GO! You can come back home if it gets hairy, but you probably won’t want to.  Foreign wine is pretty damn good.
Step 5: Learning Foreign Languages for the Tactile Learner.  Yeah, yeah, for you big-vocabularied folks don’t even go there. We will be keeping our hands to ourselves.  Sorta.  For the Tactile learner, I suggest computer games. Yes, you have to read and listen to things, you cannot avoid that, but websites like quia.com make it fun by letting you learn a language while playing hangman.  To an extent.  Look, I hate to burst your bubble here, but eventually you need to stop all this touchy BS and realize that you actually have to do some real work which involves reading, writing, listening and speaking. I mean, you had to read to get your driver’s license, right? You didn’t just go to the DMV and give the mean lady that hates her job a foot rub, did you? Oh, you did? That explains a lot....
Step 6: Drill your language.  Repetition is the best teacher, because regardless of your learning style, you will need to repeat.  Drill your language. Repetition is the best teacher, because regardless of your learning style, you will need to repeat. Drill your language. Repetition is the best teacher, because regardless of your learning style, you will need to repeat. Drill your language. Repetition is the best teacher, because regardless of your learning style, you will need to repeat. Drill your..... see, you started to repeat that step out loud, didn’t you? Eureka! It works!
Step 7: Learn slang.  No, really, if you hope to ever do more than speak on a Dora the Explorer level, you need to learn this.  And learn the dirty words first!!! And the swear words!! This is not because they are like 250% more fun than anything else ever, which they are, it is because you do not want to get yanked out of a pool by your hair by your godmother because when you thought you were yelling “Hey Girl!” what you were really yelling was“Hey F$*%ER!” and had every single Mexican in said public pool in Texas look at you angrily.  This is something we would like to avoid, both the accidental swearing and the hair pulling.  Learn slang, it could save your roots.
Step 8: Practice your language.  Now, I do realize that the passport and kicking you out of the USA might be a little much, and considering this economy you may be also paying for those education classes I suggested you take.  In that case, there are three excellent forums for practicing your language.
  1. Ethnic restaurants.  Go to ANY Chinese or Hispanic Restaurant.  Simple say “Ni-Hao” or “Hola.”  After that, there will be no more English spoken for the REST of your meal.
  2. TV.  Foreign TV is SOOOO much better than our TV in that is makes no damn sense most of the time, in the best possible way.  I used to watch a Spanish hospital drama in which one of the attending surgeons was a chimp.  I am not even trying to be funny, these people were dead serious letting this chimp make life or death decisions.  These programs force you to use your language if not for any other reason than to make sure you heard it correctly when the hot nurse called the other a slut for stealing the chimp from her.
  3. Music.  Thanks to the way music itself is composed and how good it is for the brain, learning the lyrics to your favorite foreign song, translating them, and then singing along helps with pronunciation. If you can sing.  If you can’t, forget I mentioned this, ok? Best for all of us.
Step 9: Brag about your language.  On Facebook, on Twitter, on every damn homeschool website and list serv to make people think that you actually freakin speak Spanish when in reality I hear you talking to your kid in public and you really sound like Peggy Hill!!!! (My Athena! Blogging can be so cathartic ;) ) I hope you know that I am kidding, because while you should be proud of yourself, stop being an asshat. Some people don’t have time to take up new things, and you need to shut up and leave them be. Just be happy, inside, that you are smarter than everyone else.  That should be enough.
Step 10: Reward time right??? You’ve made it to step 10 and you probably went and got the bottle of Spanish wine back at step 8, but let’s change it up a bit.  Let’s go for beer.  Yeah, I drink beer too, you got a problem with that? I recommend Dos Equis for you Spanish students and sorry, I know it is cliche, but I really like TsingTao beer for a Chinese selection. Bottoms up! Oh, and did you order that in English? You’d better not!!

How to raise Bilingual Child

Entry #2
How to raise bilingual children
Subtitle: How to curse your kids out in Walmart in a way that no one will call Child Protective Services
Today’s entry idea came to me from a former student of mine who asked this question legitimately and I gave her pretty much the answer I am giving here.  I am by no means an expert of languages, but I am a parent and a teacher and my kids do speak two languages so I guess I kinda know what I am talking about.  So, here you go...
Step 1: Select your language.  As you consider this let me make some suggestions.  Don’t pick a language because you think your kid speaking it will sound cool or make you feel cool. Take Klingon for example.  I am a nerd, but some of these nerd blogs I read where parents are teaching their kid Klingon or Elven (is that the word?) I am thinking, really, what part of you actually thought that was a good idea?!? Food for thought, China practically owns the world, so that is a good one to consider.  Spanish, my language of choice, is also one of the most spoken languages in the world, but there are other options that are equally as good.  Take sign language.  Sign language interpreters make like $60+ an hour. Be greedy, make sure you pick something useful.  These small humans will be selecting your nursing home.
Step 2: Once you have chosen said language then you need to research.  Make sure you can either speak it to your child or can find a good program to do so.  Please.  For me and every other bilingual person on this planet.  And for the love of Pete PLEASE watch an episode of “King of the Hill” where Peggy is “teaching Spanish” before you open your big mouth.  A little part of me dies inside every time I hear someone speak like that.
Step 3: Learn some clever commands first.  The easiest way to teach your child your new tongue is to scream at them in it. It also aids in Step 2, your accent.  The more I yell “No toques” and “Vengan ahora” the more authentic I sound.  It also will make the other speakers of this chosen language sympathize with you while you screaming at your children.
Step 3A: Just make sure that these commands don’t involve swear words.  I made this mistake and I believe my son knew every swear word from the Iberian Peninsula before he knew any in English.  And while this may seem cute at the time just wait.  Your child will whip out that baddie and before you know it people not of your nationality will be giving you that look.  You know that look.  The ‘why did they allow you to breed look.’
Step 4: Have a clue.  This is a learning process, not an instant I’m a cool parent fix.  Just in case you weren’t aware, here is a list of things that will make you look like a douche bag if you choose to do them during this process.
  1. Labeling everything in your house in language two while your kid is still a baby.  Dude, he/she can’t read.  So, when I come over, I am assuming those things are for you.  And that you are making this crap up.  Because you probably are.
  2. Telling people “My child is bilingual” when he/she is also a baby or a very small toddler.  When your kids is still babbling incoherently, I find it hard to believe that they are truly bilingual or lingual at all for that matter.
  3. When caught yelling at children in language and someone asks about it, just say “Oh yeah, they speak X, gets their attention you know.”  When you answer with ANYTHING else, well, you sound like a douche bag.
  4. And never, ever, ever refer to your child as “my bilingual son/daughter” ever.  In an email, a blog, a posting, whatever.  If you do not see how snobby and idiotic this makes you look you are probably reading the wrong blog.
Step 5: Enjoy it.  Like everything else in your child’s life, it should be fun. If you are spending every waking moment trying to make this happen it is not going to.  Or you are not going to like the result.  Some days my kids will NOT speak Spanish. That’s ok.  Other days they refuse to listen to a thing in English.  That is ok too.  Chill out.  And if you can’t, remember that Spanish wine I mentioned in entry #1.  Might be time to stock up if you haven’t done so already.
